UPC Version E Barcodes

UPC version E barcode imageThere are two types of UPC barcodes: version A and version E.

UPC version E symbols are also called zero suppressed. This is because they are created in a compressed format that drops one or more of the zeros in the combined company prefix and item number. They have only one notch, unlike version A symbols, that holds 6 digits.

Not all company prefixes can make UPC version E symbols. Some company prefixes allow more version E barcodes to be made because they end with two or more zeros. The last digit in the lower right corner is the UPC check digit.
